A question & answer session to get to know the new liaison for the GG Scholars Program, Edie Nissen, a graduate student and former 2025-2026 GG Scholar.
How has the GG Scholars program impacted your graduate experience?
I really appreciated how this program allowed me to explore labs outside the NCSU genetics and functional genomics program. I was exposed to a lot of different areas of study and learned new skills that will be super helpful as I delve deeper into my own research. Also, having a built in community through the cohort was really nice, especially in the beginning of the year when everything felt new and intimidating. We also started a book club and I still regularly talk to and get lunch with everyone who joined. It’s been a great way to keep in touch and talk about things other than school.
What is your favorite memory with the 2025-2026 GG Scholar cohort?
My favorite memory with my cohort members was the Thanksgiving potluck that we had! Everyone brought something to share, and it was a great way to finish out the end of our first semester together.
What was your favorite part about the GGS Program coursework?
I enjoyed the case studies in the second semester professional development and ethics course. Each subject was thought provoking and sparked a lot of interesting discussion within the cohort. I learned a lot and will carry it with me throughout my career.
What advice do you have for in-coming GG Scholars?
My advice would be to take advantage of opportunities to learn something new during rotations, but also to stay intentional and give yourself some grace if things start to feel overwhelming. It is such a new experience, and I personally found it easy to compare myself to what others are doing and fall into the imposter syndrome trap. Just remember that you are doing enough and deserve to be here!
What have you been up to this summer?
I have had a busy summer! Some highlights include traveling home to Michigan to run a 25K and meet my new baby niece, presenting a poster on my research at the Evolution conference, and a trip to the UK and Ireland. It’s been a great mix of research and much needed time to relax.
What are some of your hobbies/interests outside of the lab?
I enjoy going for jogs (add me on strava!), reading, watching reality TV, and going to Durham Bulls games. I also love ecology and enjoy wildlife and nature. I am hoping to go on a few camping trips this fall.
What are you most looking forward to for the 2026-2027 academic year?
I am looking forward to making progress with the first chapter of my research that I have been working on since I joined my lab last January. I know that looking back on everything I have accomplished will feel so rewarding. I am also excited to meet new faces this fall and learn about all the cool research the new scholars will be doing at NCSU!
