A question & answer session to get to know the 2024 GG Scholar Rob King, 1st year graduate student in the Biochemistry Program.
What aspect of genetics and/or genomics most interests you?
The genetics of plants is interesting because it uncovers the biochemical pathways that drive plant growth and adaptation. By identifying genes linked to traits like drought resistance, pest resistance, and nutrient efficiency, we can improve crop resilience. This knowledge enables the development of crop varieties with higher yields, better stress tolerance, and enhanced nutritional value.
What (or Who) influenced you to go into your field of study?
There are many individuals who have contributed to my interest in science as a whole, but the largest influence was my PI at The College of New Jersey, Dr. Wendy Clement. She pushed me to be a better scientist and to pursue career aspirations that felt unattainable at the time.
Who or what do you hope benefits from your research?
I hope my research can benefit farmers who are responsible for our food production.
What do you think is the most pressing issue or problem in your field of study?
The most pressing issue in my field of study is that farmers and the global population are suffering from food scarcity and waste mismanagement.
How do you expect the GG Scholars program to impact your work?
The GGS program fostered a collaborative environment where I was able to tackle scientific questions from different points of view that I would never consider.
What’s your dream job?
After graduate school my dream job would be to go into academia as a teaching professor. Outside of science, my dream job would be to professionally play soccer!
